Itinerary 9: Pizzo and Tropea

Arriving after a journey of over 1 hour along the SS 106 in the direction of Catanzaro, the SS 280 for Lamezia Terme and the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway exit at Pizzo. Before arriving in the town you can visit the church of Piedigrotta carved into the tuff rock by Neapolitan survivors of shipwrecks to thank God for having been saved; interior is adorned with statues of tuff rock portraying characters from the sacred scriptures. You can proceed to visit the Castello Aragonese where Gioacchino Murat was imprisoned before being shot. Finally, the small square with panoramic terrace overlooking the sea to enjoy the famous truffle ice cream of Pizzo. Proceeding to Tropea which is another terrace on the sea; very characteristic is the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola located on a small island that over the centuries thanks to the gradual silting has almost merged with the mainland.
